ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
My art education has been a life-long passion. As a child, I was always experimenting with unconventional materials. Today my playfulness is a bit more focused and refined. Since retiring as an elementary art teacher in June 2008, I have concentrated on creating a portfolio of original limited edition intaglio prints, relief prints and monotypes. I maintain my print studio, Thorntown Press, at 137 South Pearl Street~ Thorntown, Indiana.
Mentors have played a huge role in my own fulfillment and success, passing on skills and providing me with new opportunities for exploration. I was trained as a metal smith in the 1970s under the tutelage of Alma Eikerman, Distinctive Professor of Metalsmithing at IU, Bloomington. Eikerman instilled in me a dedication to the skills of masterful craftsmanship based on a solid understanding of design principles and studio technology. The crucible of the metals shop was the perfect place to practice my craft ~ an artistry which demands attention to detail, patience and passion. My transformation as a print artist happened many years later and reflects my current interest in narrative, two-dimensional printmaking that, like metalsmithing, is heavily process oriented. I participate in many local, regional & national juried exhibitions. “Field & Stream” (intaglio), was a 2013 Delta National Small Print Exhibition purchase prize winner and is a part of the Arkansas State University Art Museum permanent collection. "Poudre River~ Rustic" (linocut), was purchased in 2014 for the permanent collection of the Anderson Museum of Art. "Phantoms of the Deep" (linocut) is part of the Syracuse University, NY permanent print collection. "Mountain Contours through Pines" (linocut) won second place in the 2015 Indiana Artists Member Exhibit at Minnetrista, Muncie. In April 2016, I won the "Fain Best in Printmaking" award at Providence Rhode Island Art Club's all media show, "COLOR", for "Midwest Maize" (linocut). I won a Juror's Choice Award at the 37th Annual National Print Exhibition (2017) at Artlink Contemporary Gallery, Ft. Wayne for "Oceanic Fantasia V" (linocut & collage). I was a 2017 Frankfort Community Public Library purchase prize winner for "Colorado Splendor" (linocut). "Roiling Cadence (linocut) won the Speedball Best of Linocut Printmaking award at the Society of American Graphic Artists National Members Exhibition in 2021.
